We are very pleased that JTD has been appointed to carry out the remodelling and renovation works of a former nunnery in Hospental. The building is situated in the Urseren valley and lies at the intersection of two historic routes over the Alps – the Furka Pass and the Gotthard Pass, with a privileged overview of the valley and the old Hospental tower.
The building – originally a nunnery built in the late 1800s as part of the grouping of buildings around St. Karl chapel – was split into separate dwellings 25 years ago, and our brief is to convert it back into single use. Although, the building itself isn’t listed, it is included in the protected area of the adjacent chapel.
The brief is to reconfigure the existing building as a retreat for winter and summer in the mountains with a strong emphasis on sustainability and energy efficiency. Where possible, we seek to reuse materials and retain the character of the existing building.
