Jonathan Tuckey Design are thrilled to announce that our Urban Barn project has been named Home Extension of the Year at the 2022 British Home Awards. This honour is presented to a building which is innovative, thoughtful to its surrounding context and of the highest design quality.

Urban Barn is a new studio and residence located on a quiet London grove. Formerly dilapidated workshops and garages, it has been reinvented into a light and spacious home. Its street front facade mirrors components from its neighbours but stands proudly individual with protruding elements, alternative brickwork and hints of modernity peeking through. The back of the building utilises the quiet vantage away from city life, with large windows connecting the interior to a contemplative courtyard.

The interior has been transformed from the condition the site was previously in. Three separate buildings have been united through generous interconnecting spaces that are more adaptable and efficient. A muted white and pink colour palette highlights the exposed brickwork and craftsmanship of contemporary wooden elements.

Urban Barn has retained and restored much of the existing structures, improving their thermal envelope and providing a breathable, naturally ventilated building fabric that resonates with the material of the old buildings.
